National Whistleblower Day 2025

Celebrated on July 30th each year, National Whistleblower Day commemorates the passage of America’s first whistleblower law by the Continental Congress on July 30, 1778. This day honors the contributions of whistleblowers in exposing waste, fraud, and abuse.

What is a Whistleblower?

A whistleblower is a person who exposes information or activities within an organization that are deemed illegal, unethical, or wrong. Whistleblowers play a crucial role in uncovering wrongdoing and holding organizations accountable.

Reportable Issues

There are many examples of reportable issues, including:

  • Fraud and Financial Issues
  • Health and Safety Violations
  • Discrimination and Harassment
  • Breaches of Contract or Law
  • Abuse of Authority
  • Gross Mismanagement or Waste
  • And, Dangers to Public Health or Safety

Your Right to Speak Out!

An employer cannot retaliate against you for exercising your rights under the Department of Labor’s whistleblower protection laws. Retaliation includes actions, such as firing or laying off, demoting, denying overtime or promotion, or reducing pay or hours.

Filing a Whistleblower Complaint

OSHA provides a online whistleblower complaint form with instructions. However, OSHA does not require filing with the online form. You can also file a complaint orally through the phone or walk-in at any OSHA office, or in writing, and in any language.

If you file a complaint, OSHA will contact you to determine whether to conduct an investigation. You need to respond to OSHA’s follow-up contact or your complaint will be dismissed.

Conclusion

National Whistleblower Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of truth, accountability, and the individuals who risk so much to uphold them. Whistleblowers shine a light in the darkest corners, exposing wrongdoing and protecting the public interest. As we recognize their bravery, we must also commit to creating a culture that supports and safeguards those who speak out.
