Introduction
National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is an important initiative designed to raise awareness about one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities…falls. Every year, thousands of workers are injured or killed due to falls, particularly in industries like construction, manufacturing, and warehousing.
National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction
According to OSHA, a Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. This year, Safety Stand-Down focuses on fall hazards and fall prevention.
Anyone who wants to prevent hazards in the workplace can participate in a Stand-Down. OSHA is partnering with key groups, including:
- The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
- The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)
- OSHA approved State Plans
- State consultation programs
- The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR)
- And, more!
Conducting a Stand-Down
Companies can conduct Stand-Downs by taking a break to have toolbox talks or other safety activities, such as inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards. OSHA provides a webpage that includes steps to prepare for a successful Stand-Down. Additionally, OSHA hosts an Events page with events that are free and open to the public to help employers and employees find events in your area.
If you plan on hosting your own free event that will be open to the pubic, contact your Regional Stand-Down Coordinator.
