The World Foundation of Mental Health set the World Mental Health Day theme of 2023 as “Mental Health is a universal human right.” This day is targeted to raise awareness of mental health and encourage a positive change in people’s mental health. Today is all about spreading mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma.
Good mental health is crucial to our overall health and well-being. 1 in 8 people globally are living with mental health conditions which can impact their physical health, their well-being, how they connect with others, and their livelihood. Mental health conditions are affecting an increasing number of adolescents and young people.
Having a mental health condition should never be a reason to deprive someone of their human rights yet many people all over the world continue to experience a wide range of human rights violations. Many people who struggle are excluded from community life and discriminated against and some cannot even access the mental health care they need or can only access care that violates their human rights.
It’s important that we encourage those struggling to seek help, provide resources, and educate people on mental health.
JJ Safety offers Mental Health Awareness training. There are other resources people can use such as the Tools and Resources page for Mental Health on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.
